How to Begin Your First Quilt
Making a start as a quilter can be confusing, so here’s some advice if you are contemplating your first quilt or starting again after a long hiatus.
Get your bearings.
In quilting, there are really only three things to master: cutting fabric accurately, sewing a straight quarter inch seam, and ironing without distorting the fabric. The rest, as they say, is details. If you can split your projects into those three areas in your mind, and work to master those three tasks, you’ll be ahead of the game – way ahead.
You Don’t Need to be a Math Whiz
Don’t let the math scare you. Don’t let the rulers and tables of conversions make you quake in your fuzzy slippers. Learning these things develops organically from working with a specific project and is often intuitive.
In the last 30+ years, quilting has come a long way. There are some amazing tools on the market that can help you turn out an accomplished quilt the first time you try. My next series of posts teach you about some important tools, and help you make a great first quilt without breaking the bank. Tune in.
